The first 30 days of a forward deployed engineering engagement
The first month is about orientation, trust, and one sharp operational win. The FDE maps the workflow, interviews users, traces systems, picks a painful bottleneck, and ships a working improvement fast.
The practical version
- Week 1: map users, systems, data, constraints.
- Week 2: shadow operations and pick a narrow wedge.
- Weeks 3–4: ship, measure, and decide whether to generalise.
A forward deployed engineer creates value because they do not wait for perfect requirements. They use operational context as the specification, deliver a concrete improvement, then decide what should become reusable product.
That is the difference between another implementation project and a compounding learning loop.
